<![CDATA[Thanks for the comment. Indeed, Diamond's idea seems reasonable. However (this directed towards avoiding any potential confusion for a potential chance reader other than Rama) the work mentioned in the NYT article is based on theories of the mind's evolution. As opposed to socio-utilitarian hypotheses a la Diamond (which are not classically Darwinian.)

<![CDATA[These days, I think "All I ever needed to know, I learnt from Jared Diamond". This argument about God and the role in civilization is explained beautifully in one of his books (I think it is Guns ...).

He proposes a theory about the role of God in early human conflicts. Those people that are united by faith are easily convinced to go to war with others over God. In fact, the history of humans is replete with such instances. Btw, DD Kosambi wrote a treatise on Indian Gods, Totems, early wars, and religions.

I suppose, an angry God served a useful purpose in early days. Later days, it was a benevolent God that served its purpose. Old testment God was not useful when peace and prosperity were needed. These days, are we seeing the return of Tyrannical God?

End of Rambling,
Rama

<![CDATA[There is a book by Edward Tufte on the cognitive dissonance of power point. He traced the challenger disasterto powerpoint presentation. http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/static/powerpointremix.pdf has that redux in ppt style. There are few other spoofs of powerful prose reduced to spoofs: http://www.aaronsw.com/2002/classicPowerpoint

Gotta go and prepare a slide deck (oh how I hate that word) for the corporate drones.
